Loughborough University Sports Science Service

EXCITING NEW OPPORTUNITY TO ALL LSAC MEMBERS

The Sports Science Service provides physiological testing and monitoring, as well as an educational service.  LSAC will be working on conjunction with the sports science team to provide you the support you need to improve your performance – no matter what level you are.  Examples of the testing available are:

Lab based testing:

·         VO2 max test: Assesses the maximum capability to use oxygen, and is an indicator of endurance performance potential. Measures of maximal oxygen uptake and maximal heart rate are obtained, as well as speed at VO2 max which is a measure that is closely related to endurance performance, and is a key speed to train at for improving VO2 max and increasing running speed at VO2 max.

·    Running economy: A submaximal test, during which oxygen uptake, heart rate and blood lactate concentration are measured. The lactate and heart rate response to increasing running speeds can be used assess training status, monitor progress with training and to prescribe training intensities.

·         60-s run test: This is relevant to 400m and middle-distance runners.  The amount of lactate that accumulates in response to this test should decrease as the athletes’ fitness improves and competition draws closer.

·         Wingate test: Evaluates anaerobic power and capacity; particularly important for sprinters.  It involves a 10 or 30 second maximal sprint against resistance.

·           Isokinetic (Cybex) dynamometry: This is a sophisticated and very accurate test of dynamic strength. Strength can be assessed in any muscle/group of muscles at different speeds and at different angles. Strengths and weakness and relative imbalances between muscles can be determined and used to monitor and adjust training.

·           Body composition: The thickness of skinfolds at 8 different sites is measured to estimate the amount of fat and lean body mass (mainly muscle) an individual is carrying.

·           Lung function: Assesses the efficiency of the lungs, and therefore the capacity to remove waste carbon dioxide during exercise.

·           Nutrition advice and consultations:  Dietary analyses and feedback.

For more information about these tests and how they can benefit you, please firstly speak to your event coach.  Contact Rhona Blair for information on prices and availability: [email protected]

Tests include information and advice on all aspects of training and competition.  All tests can be done on a group or individual basis. Discounts will apply with larger bookings.  LSAC will offer subsidised prices on individual basis, regardless of ability.  Please contact Alice Naylor to discuss what is available to you.  [email protected]
