Manchester Moments

by KT Horne (Yes I am Scottish and yes I am a thrower!)

Spot the Lufbra athlete!

Armed with a flat cap and pint of Boddies I set of up North for the Commonwealth Games 2002.  Dress code for the week  included Lufbra/Scotland vest and Scotland flag worn sarong styleee round waist for entire duration of the games (yes I did look like a tit wandering round the town centre!)

Obviously I was there not only to support the Scots but the rest of the home nations and most importantly the Lufbra Purple Army, so that’s at least one person in every event/heat, so had no voice by end of second day (much to joy of people was staying with) Having acquired the name Fog Horne some years ago I was continually getting txts from others in the stadium cause they could hear my mellow tones drifting throughout the stadium, result!

There were so many highlights it was hard to pick one out.  From a throwers point of view Suzanne Roberts in the woman’s hammer got the games off to a great start, with the camera man taking a shine to her as she was continually plastered over the big screen round the stadium!  Our own Goldie Sayers in the Javelin and big Emeka in the Shot and Discus along with old boy Steve Backely shows what an awesome squad the Lufbra throwers have, big up JP!!!  Just goes to show that everyone really wants to be a thrower, you know you do!

‘Super Sunday’ was without doubt one of the best days in athletics history.  The atmosphere was indescribable, you could feel the noise as Jonathon Edwards started down the runway.  Paula (now diva-esq as don’t need to mention her last name!), what can I say, a standing ovation on every lap sums it up.  My own wee highlight was Lee McConnell’s silver in the 400, beats the hell out of a Glasgow Schools medal any day!  (and no she’s never gonna do high jump again before anyone asks).

The ‘other’ highlights:  managed to sneak into Scottish Team hotel to celebrate Lee and Jamie Quarrie’s achievements, was all set to drink the bar dry, but got spotted by stuck up hotel people and promptly got thrown out with my entourage who were not impressed, especially as some of them were staying there!  Ran to nearest pub but had missed last orders and no amount of blagging helped, didn’t get a drink till bloody 1am!

Through military style planning managed to sneak into the last session I didn’t have tickets for, involved many texts, phone calls and blagging (No I am Lee McConnell’s cousin really!) then sat shitting myself that I’d get caught and thrown out at any minute, quality!

Met David Beckham and Brooklyn while out shopping and tried to get him to autograph AW but big minders were having non of it, obviously not an athletics fan then!

Being an athlete obviously my staple diet is Maccy D’s, was gutted when my attempts to go through Drive Thru were halted!

All in all it was a fantastic week, drank far too much, did not training and saw history being made.  A huge congratulations to all the Lufbra athletes past and present who competed.  See you in Australia in 2006!
